Ordered one of the sets (forgot the name!) and it was really nice, not too heavy but still filling. The cucur udang was a standout and the satay was tender and juicy. Loved the classy interior, very elegant. Prices are high, but the quality of the food makes up for it.

Food is very good here. Dishes are very unique. Service is pretty bad though. No one waited on us and we had to flag down a waiter many times just to ask for basic things. It’s worth trying but I don’t think I would come back. Lots of good food in KL for cheaper price with better service.

The restaurant is strategically located at downtown and inside “The Linc” that can arrive by various modes of transport, atmosphere is nice with a lot of local cultural elements throughout, and it is quite spacious between tables despite a lot of guests during weekend dinner time…

We ordered a set menu which is for 8-10 people and there are variety of selections, and we could not finish all at the end, by the way there are 10 of us, each portion is big too. Taste of most of the food is not bad, especially the satay, fish tastes great…

Service throughout the night was good, which we think should rank the best out of all categories…

It is a nice experience with not too affordable pricing overall, and the restaurant is Michelin rated for 2023 and 2024, worth a try for those that like local cuisine…

Hasnain was my attentive server who live up to the restaurant’s world class service. Always help to refill our waters, rice and very polite as well.

Other servers are also very good. Greet us, ask us hows everything and make us feel like Royal Prince and Princess!

The food are so sumptuous and sooooo delicious! Perfect is all i can say!

Ambience with good music and eye catching designs certainly appeals to our liking!

Located inside The Linc, this Michelin recognised restaurant was our choice on our short stay to sample local tastes from one of the best chef’s in town and we were not disappointed.

The Chef’s platter appetiser provided a good range of flavours and textures to start our meal. The beef ribs were excellent, the bottomless rice a great touch to complement our main and the side dishes we selected, all of which provided for a great dining experience.

Even the lychee soda was very enjoyable as a refreshment on the side.

Only complaint which has nothing to do with the restaurant itself is our Grab driver refused to drop us outside The Linc and instead went via the underground car park and tagged us with the 13 ringgit fee for his drive through – save yourself a few dollars and get dropped off nearby and walk in.
———-

Well curated dishes and good flavours. Good presentation. Duck dish was tasty but had quite a few bony parts and there were lots of bones in the fish unfortunately which made it little unpleasant to eat. Prawn petai was very good and so was the flavoured rice….which we could have eaten on its own! Only non alcoholic drinks on offer but they were all quite refreshing and nice.

It was a truly wonderful experience celebrating my birthday here! The service was excellent, and the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout. The food was delicious, and the team gave us great suggestions for combinations that worked perfectly. The ambience was lovely, with beautiful spots around the restaurant that made for some great photo opportunities. A special thanks to Mr. Ayad for his exceptional assistance and hospitality – he really made the evening memorable.

Food was generally okay, kids meal was adequate but the fish and chips came with ketchup instead of tartar sauce which is peculiar. Burger came with a good sized patty. Salads were good but again the mushroom soup was on the salty side. Restaurant is always crowded but there’s a good spread of items on the menu.

One of the best local Malaysian meals we have had! The lamb shank was on point! The meat separated from the bone smoothly and it was juicy. I loved the fragrant rice too. Very flavorful n complemented the lamb beautifully. The platter was delicious too. The satay was marinated very well but we ran out of the peanut sauce that we needed to share with the gado gado. Loved their homemade concoction of iced tea with lemon sherbet. We were too full so we tabao the chendol back to our hotel.

Serai is a Nyonya Style restaurant, local Malaysia style.. the place is comforting, spacious enough for large group, have a private room.

The food selection is vast, mostly local food in modern style, the portion is big, so the value for money is amazing, and all of them is delicious

I had a fantastic dining experience at this beautifully designed restaurant. The ambiance was warm and elegant with modern wooden decor and soft lighting—perfect for a relaxed meal. The satay dish I ordered was absolutely delicious—grilled to perfection and served with a rich, flavorful peanut sauce and a nice variety of sides including cucumbers, onions, and rice cakes. The refreshing lemon mint drink complemented the meal wonderfully. Great service, tasty food, and a cozy atmosphere—I’d definitely come back!

We celebrated my husband’s birthday here. Enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The staff were very friendly. The food was served quickly too. The food were amazing. I had the mix satay platter, the meats were soft and juicy. We enjoyed the gado gado too. My son enjoyed his Middle Eastern medley and my husband said the crispy salmon could be crispier but they were nice still. We all enjoyed the Berry Pavlova the most. A nice ending to the meal.

Assolutamente consigliato! Consigliato

Great Malay flavours in the heart of jalan chow kit… The double dinner fish was tasty crispy and the sauce that came with it was a knock out. The smoked chicken was really well charcoal induced and the curry was nice. Fresh salads came with with it as nice compliments.

The food is excellent and delicious. The price is reasonable and I love Petai Kachang with deep fried Grouper with Sambal. The blood clams with sambal and petai and Tempoyak are excellent. The orange juice worth clearing my stomach before lunch and teh Tarik are worth washing the lunch down. I would recommend it and there are other local Malay restaurants that cost less elsewhere outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Pictures taken on the 190425, Saturday.

Misleading five-star reviews for this restaurant.

1) The stir fried chilli paste siakap was dry.
2) The stir fried eggplants soy sauce was salty.
3) The spicy coconut gravy prawn was bland.
After our visit, i noticed this restaurant already had several bad reviews and my experience was consistent with those. Sadly, the restaurant self-claimed to be the ‘premium’ malay cuisine.

Services need serious improvement.

1) Rude waiter. One of the waiter took away the unopened carbonated drink from our table while we were still looking at the label on the drink…even before our food was served.
2) No-manner kind of waiter. Repeatedly ask to take away our plates…eventhough we were clearly still eating.
3) Staring kind of waiter. Is staring at eating customers a norm for this restaurant?

I would say that the waiter who took our order was helpful and polite.

Sadly, me and my siblings overall experience today consistent with those low rating reviews.

I wonder if the google five star review results from the complimentary bubur kacang..that we refused to have as it is not to our liking.

I hope for others to make wiser choice when deciding place to dine.

Organised an event for my Toastmasters Club dinner a week+ ago. De.Wan was my recommendation and indeed it was a hit with the committee. From the Starters, ie Kerabu pucuk paku kerang, Chicken satay & the special tauhu, entered with eye-catching platter presentation. The Main course was bold yet gentle in both appearance and taste. The live Seabass cooked masam masin tantalised the taste buds of all. Kambing kurma was delicious and not spicy, even suitable for young ones to savour. Jumbo Sotong bakar was a popular pick by everyone, soft, tender and on the right fire heat. Ayam masak tomato prune was simply yummy, rich gravy blended in very well with the other servings and added colour in the main course. We must eat sufficiently 5 colours in our meals, that’s important. The Ulaman Desa sambal tempoyak provided a good chill and balance to the heavier cooking and spices in the dishes. All for a wholesome degustation. Love the rice servings too, namely, nasi pandan delima and nasi bunga telang, both equally pleasant in its food colours. As for the dessert, we had the fruits galore and the Nangka madu ais kepal, giving a sweet memory to our event. Lasting impression is our main criteria and our guests were all equally impressed. Overall atmosphere was private and pleasing, good staff support and attention to our needs. AV HDMI cable needs some assurance so that our event screens can be on a smoother flow, still manageable. Lastly, De.Wan is the right avenue for our event which went well in sync with the theme. It was indeed an evening to be remembered.

Food was generally good but the service could be improved. For a place charging these kind of prices you would expect more, it felt like I walked into a kopitiam where the hostess didn’t even get us seated properly.

We were led to our table but requested a different table as it was right in the centre of the restaurant and we wanted more privacy, and there were plenty of tables. Firstly we were told no told tables are reserved, next we asked if we can join 2 tables which they did, but they didn’t finish bringing all the chairs, so we had to pull our own. In the end, no other party came to dine at the table they said was reserved

Really put a damper on the evening and why would have been a nice experience

We had a wonderful time dining at De.Wan on June 17th, 2025.

Although our reservation was at 12:30 PM, we were graciously accommodated earlier at 12 PM. The warm welcome and attentive service set the tone for an enjoyable meal.

Supervisor Sam went above and beyond, ensuring our large order was well-managed. His proactive approach in updating us on the order and thoughtfully sequencing the dishes made the experience seamless and enjoyable.

The food was outstanding—bold and flavorful, offering a richer taste than what we’ve experienced elsewhere. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, adding a unique touch to our meal.

Special appreciation goes to our servers, Fatma and another attentive Indian lady (sorry to miss out your name), whose keen observations ensured we had everything we needed throughout our dining experience. Their professionalism and attentiveness added to the overall enjoyment of our meal.

All in all, we were thoroughly pleased with the service, the food, and the hospitality. A big thank you to the entire team—staff, servers, and chefs—for delivering an excellent experience.

Cheers to a memorable dining moment!

Madam Kwan’s is hands down one of the best places to try authentic Malaysian food in Kuala Lumpur. While it was slightly on the pricier side, the variety and quality of the dishes make it well worth the visit. We dropped by around 1.30pm on a weekend and had to wait about 10 minutes as there was a short queue — a sign of how popular the place is!

Once seated, the staff quickly handed us the menu, and we placed our order via QR code. We went all in and ordered asam laksa, prawn noodles, nasi lemak, otah, rojak, chendol, teh tarik, and teh halia. Honestly, every dish hit the mark — full of flavour, rich in tradition, and clearly made with care.

It was a satisfying meal from start to finish, and we left feeling full and happy. We will definitely be back next time to explore more of their menu!

Just had a delightful lunch at Madam Kwan’s! The Nasi Bojari was as vibrant and flavorful as ever, a real standout. The Cantonese Noodle Soup was comforting and the broth was rich. I also enjoyed the light and refreshing Ipoh Kway Teow Soup. While the Nasi Lemak with Curry Chicken was tasty, the curry could have had a bit more of a kick for my liking. The Honey Lemon Ice was the perfect sweet and tangy refreshment on a warm day. The Deep Fried Dumplings were crispy and satisfying. And of course, no Malaysian meal is complete without a perfectly pulled Teh Tarik (hot) – it was just right. Overall, a satisfying and classic Malaysian dining experience!

Food in general was good. The assam fish soup was not tangy enough. Amount of fish was also quite miserable. Loved the Asparagus with cashew and lily buds.

Service was good but the environment… very noisy and cramp. Customers passing us kept knocking our table or our chairs.

SANG HA NOODLES

You have to be pretty confident to open a Resturant with practically a single dish on offer. That’s the premise of Nale – short for Nasi Lemak? It is after all our unofficial national dish.

And how do they rate? Well the Nasi Lemak is pretty decent. The rice isn’t very aromatic but it comes in nice individually separated grains. The anchovies and peanuts are fresh and crunchy. And you get 3 slices of pretty large cucumber too.

Most importantly for me is the Sambal. This was on the mild side and somewhat sweet. This may be a crowd pleaser but does not earn any points from me. I also asked for another serving of their Sambal Hijau and this too turned out mild and sweetish. They do have a Sambal Superhot that I didn’t try, so hopefully that’s better than the two I tried.

Beef Rendang and Beef Gulai were both well cooked and tender. The beef in the rendang had absorbed the coconut flavours. The gulai was creamy. Both however were not particularly spicy, so no top marks for either.

The Fried Chicken was doused in a gravy, so you couldn’t really discern the freshness of the fried chicken. The gravy was the same as the beef Gulai?

A side order of Sambal Terung (eggplant) was well prepared. The eggplant cubes had been quickly fried and resulted in a creamy texture. The sambal however was the sweetish non-spicy variety, so no to marks again.

Overall I came away rather disappointed. If only they could get the spice level up, this could be a top notch franchise. But judging from the lunch crowds here, they don’t seem to be doing too badly either. I might return for that Superhot sambal though.

Tried
1. Rendang beef with petai- the beef was very tender , slightly on the sweet side and the addition of petai balances the sweetness of the beef with the slight bitterness of the crunchy petai. Sedap
2 Sayur masak lemak- not the usual sayur , you’ll find in a masak lemak dish. There were broccoli, eggplant, long beans , etc. , all cooked in a flavourful rich broth of santan. I like
3 Fried chicken in sambal – The crispy pieces of fried chicken were served with a fiery sambal. Could taste kaffir lime leaves in the semi spicy, sour , sweet sambal.
4 Extra sambal hijau- sambal hijau was just okay
5.Teh tarik ais without sugar- nice ,the slightly bitter aftertaste of tea complemented the mild sweetness of the condensed milk.

Their signature nasi lemak was good; rice has santan aroma and complimented with crispy kacang + ikan bilis(personally prefer their ikan bilis as it has been rinsed to remove excess salt) and fresh cucumber slice. There’s a choice of wagyu upgrade for an exciting change to your nasi lemak. Their signature sambal gravy completed the meal. I’m prepared to make my next visit to try the rest from the menu.

I first tried the Mid Valley shop some time ago and had a good impression of their grilled chicken. Revisited this branch recently, which has better service and a more comfortable environment than the Mid Valley one.

The food quality remained consistently good. The nasi lemak itself was decent, not the best I have had, but the various meat dishes that came with it was delicious.

Overall, it is worth returning to when craving a satisfying high calorie meal.

One of my favourite Nasi Lemak spots in KL! The quality of the food is consistent with their Mid Valley outlet and is so tasty. Portion size is slightly above average as well

Outlet is huge with plenty of seats available and the staff are all very friendly and helpful. Don’t forget to sign up as a member for a free welcome drink and RM5 off your first meal

Would highly recommend to everyone

I love the modern take on these delicious nasi lemak dishes! The decor is sleek and clean, and they offer amazing sauces to choose from. The Nale sauce is not spicy at all, the gulai is very mild, and the sambal hijau is spicy but gives a nice fragrant punch. If you’re into curry-style sauces, this is definitely a place you must try!

Our favorite dishes are the beef rendang (so soft and tender), beef in gulai sauce, lamb shank with Nale sauce, and the Nale chicken nasi lemak. Service is relaxed and friendly. Thank you! 🙂

Tried NALE for the first time because I was craving nasi lemak, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offer so much more than just that.Their menu has an impressive variety more than just nasi lemak lovers.

The food was beautifully presented like a piece of art on a plate and the taste did not disappoint.I especially loved the sambal, which had the perfect balance of spice and flavor. The lamb was a standout, so juicy and tender!Overall, a great experience. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their dishes.

excellent food! the nasi lemak dishes was so delicious, with the beef rendang in particular being my favourite! the beef was soft and tender and melts in your mouth. the chicken
curry was so good and went very well with the coconut rice too.

the one let down was the otak. it tasted quite bland and felt a little bit undercooked inside. but the high quality of the other dishes more than made up for that!

and the service is top notch from the very attentive and friendly staff!

will definitely be back soon to try the other dishes and especially the beef rendang!

The satay is highly recommended! We loved the chunky peanut sauce. Beef rendang nasi lemak was good too, though the beef portion wasn’t large. Sambal petai prawns were too salty, and banana fritters were just average.

Service was prompt and ambience was conducive to conversation and a relaxing meal.

This is where foreigners gonna go for Malaysia food! One stop restaurant where every dish sings of Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage in addition to the flawless taste. Each mouthful delivers a symphony of flavours, with a bit of everything on your palate. The price is reasonable justified by the huge portion, fresh ingredients plus, given the comfy ambiance located in malls.
I had the followings with Japanese friends and they loved it too.
Cantonese Fried Beef Noodle ~ Flat rice noodles cooked in silky egg-based sauce served with tender sliced beef, ginger and spring onions.
Curry Laksa ~ Yellow noodles in curry broth (coconut milk) served with chicken slices, prawns, beansprouts, fried beancurd puff and beancurd sheet.
Nasi Bojari ~ Tri-coloured rice served with Assam Prawn, Beef Rendang, vegetables and deep fried chicken drumstick.
Ipoh Kway Teow Soup (Noodles changed to wonton noodles in chicken broth served with shredded chicken, prawns (add-on prawns) and garnished with spring onions and chives.
Hokkien Noodles ~ Thick yellow noodles fried in dark soy sauce served with chicken, prawns, squid and vegetables.
Asam Laksa ~ Thick rice noodles in tangy tamarind fish broth topped with local Mackerel fish, shredded lettuce and onions.
Red Bean Ice ~ Shaved ice served with red beans, jelly, coconut milk and palm sugar syrup.
Soya bean with Cincau jelly. Love it!

Madam Kwan’s here is at great location (right in the big mall, easy to find) to try authentic Malaysian cuisine.
The restaurant is spacy enough & we can move easily in between tables. Speed of serving is good as well.
Food are fresh, especially the veggie, and very tasty; the spicies they use are very well blended, not that liquid as in a normal curry, providing a unique taste of Nasi Lemak.
They ran out of stock for chicken in Satay so we ordered Beef Satay instead, also good taste
Lime juice is also freshly made at place; we love the fried banana at dessert as well
In general highly recommended for foreigners (with or without kids) who want to enjoy local food but hesitate to go to street vending foods.

The Nasi Lemak is disappointing. Two large pieces of curry chicken, but the quality of coconut milk they used wasn’t good, and ruined the taste. The ‘sambal’ is a bunch of sautéed onions with anchovies. The acar is average. The chicken floss is unnecessary. The sambal petai prawn was also something I would not describe as sambal.

A true Michelin worthy restaurant.

Ordered the 4 pax set and shared amongst 5 people.

Food here was excellent and very fresh! The chicken satay was tender and juicy, while the vegetables were light and refreshing. The tiger prawns packed a spicy kick but were absolutely worth it—they were big, fresh, and full of flavour.

Although I’m not usually a fan of fish, I was pleasantly surprised that the fish here wasn’t “fishy” at all. Overall, a very enjoyable dining experience!

The staff were all really friendly and provided great service too.

This is my second visit, and I still thoroughly enjoy the experience. We came as a big group of 10 and were seated in a private room. One thing I love about this place is the variety of seating options, from open spaces to cozy private rooms, and even areas with romantic vibes.

The food was absolutely delicious, serving up authentic Malay-Indo flavors. I am not a rice person but I can’t resist the yellow rice. We ordered a wide variety of dishes from the menu, and everyone at the table was satisfied.

No complaints about the service. It may have felt a little messy at times due to our multiple rounds of ordering in a large group, but the staff handled it well overall.

Upscale Malay-Indo restaurant. We had a fantastic dinner here. Loved the food variety, taste did not disappoint, and presentation was top notch. Absolutely recommend this place ✅

We ordered the:

– appetiser platter (amazing for sharing and if you want a bit of everything)
– tahu telur (fried tauhu egg tower with sweet peanut sauce, a classic!)
– daging goreng sambal selasih (bigger portion than we expected. Meat is tender and well flavoured in dark sauce. The star of the night! So yummy)
– dancing fish with sambal kedondong // sambal dabu dabu (not really worth IMO. Fish used is Siakap. We found the sambal kedondong more interesting. It was a blend of sweet with mild spice)
– terong sambal ijo & merah (it’s just a brinjal with 2 sambals, I would skip this)
– pucuk paku kerabu (very unique! Never had pucuk cooked in this method before. Large portion. Good blend of sweet and spicy.)
– pucuk gulai (flavourful gulai sauce. Portion is moderate sized for this.)
– Nasi berempah kuning (didn’t expect rice to taste this good. No regrets paying the extra RM1 for this. Very fragrant and yummy. However it’s not free flow unlike the white rice)
– winter asam boi (blue drink, feeds 4. Fizzy drink with orange jelly. Very blue which was a bit disturbing. Otherwise, it was quite pleasant.)
– autumn pomegranate (red drink. Fizzy, sour drink with pomegranate. This was just ok. I prefer the winter asam boi drink.)
– coconut panna cotta with golden nangka goreng (super lovely way to end my meal. Portion is on the small side, feeds 1-2 pax. But the creamy panna cotta went super well with the deep fried nangka.)

Service was superb throughout our meal, we felt like celebrities. However the seats we were given smelled FOUL. It was cushioned seat against the wall. Full house on a Friday evening, I would recommend making a reservation here. I felt quite thirsty after the meal, probably quite a bit of MSG used.

A Five-Star Experience at Dancing Fish BSC.

I recently enjoyed a truly lovely lunch with friends at Dancing Fish BSC, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. Everything deserves a five-star rating, especially the exceptional service we received.

Our waiter, Mr. Ferdaus, was absolutely brilliant. He was incredibly attentive and genuinely welcoming, making us feel comfortable throughout our meal. He was also remarkably fast at responding to every request we had, setting a high bar for service.

Complementing the wonderful hospitality was the fantastic food. The dishes were exquisite and easily matched the quality of the service, earning a well-deserved five stars.

We couldn’t have asked for a better outing, and we will certainly be returning to Dancing Fish BSC very soon!

We came to Manja KL with modest expectation, but every dish truly exceeded our expectation. What made the meal stand out was the chef’s masterful use of sauces! Each one carefully crafted to elevate the flavors and bring out the freshness in every bite.

I would say the dishes tend to be on the heavier, more intense side, which might not be for everyone, but overall was very satisfied.

We were given a complimentary homemade truffle chocolate as we were here for a birthday celebration. It was so richly infused with truffle, making it a very unique treat.

We had the Lunch Set but also ordered the lamb as a sharing dish. It was soo good! The lamb is well grilled and not too gamey. The hummus is something I’ve never tasted before. It has some curry taste which is truly extraordinary!

The service was attentive and friendly, which added to the overall positive vibe dining there. All in all, this was a very satisfying meal and absolutely worth the price. Highly recommended!

Stumbled upon this restaurant by chance and really glad we made the decision to dine here. The food is flavorful and unique. The ravioli with scallops was a bit underwhelming but everything else was on point.

The service is exceptional as the staffs are attentive. We came here for Mother’s Day celebration and glad to receive a complementary dessert to end things on a sweet note.

Just be mindful that there’s limited space for valet parking that costs rm15.

We had visited Manja KL a few times, last was in 2021 and it was honestly my favourite restaurant as the food was sooo yummy! We had recently visited last week and the food was not good as before anymore. However, the setting of the restaurant was so beautiful as it remained the same!

My parents and I had a wonderful time together and we were very excited to be able to visit Manja KL again.❤️ Our favourite was the bread with brocolli sauce! I’m happy that I got to spend time with my parents before university’s second sem in Manja KL with good food.

Hopefully, the food’s quality improves in the future. I’ve also heard that the price of the food will increase soon.

An unforgettable dining experience at Manja !

From the moment we arrived, we were impressed not only by the beautiful colonial setting but also by the outstanding service from Tarek. His warm, attentive, and genuinely caring approach and advices made our evening truly special.

We started with the mango salad, a fresh and perfectly balanced dish, and the Borneo coconut tuna appetizer, which was delicate and full of flavour.

For mains, we had the Bumba cauliflower steak — creative and beautifully presented — and the Tamarind chili barramundi plate, rich and satisfying. We also enjoyed two excellent cocktails: one with dragon fruit and another with lime, both refreshing and well crafted.

Sitting at our patio table with a stunning view of the Menara Tower made the evening even more memorable.

Every dish showcased high-quality ingredients and thoughtful preparation, and the entire experience felt personalized thanks to Tarek’s exceptional service.

Highly recommended for anyone looking for a special dining experience in Kuala Lumpur. We can’t wait to return.

Very decent and authentic food and prices are considered reasonable. Personally favourite are the pie tee and the satay. Not much of a queue as we only went at 3pm for a late lunch. Staff service was good

I ordered a hot teh tarik without sugar, a cup of hot water and one durian ice kachang (ice shaving) and had gula melaka syrup instead of the usual colour syrup. It comes with grass jelly cubes, sweet corn and salted peanuts that tasted like they were from peanut butter. I love it! Too full for other food as I had breakfast 2 hours ago. I will come back for the Penang Assam Laksa later for lunch.

I went there just before they close to order. They welcomed us and guided to seat. We ordered some basic dishes to prepare easily. And I finally found that this restaurant is real 맛집. The fried rice was amaizing with fire flavered and perfect seasoning. Cendol was exactly what I wanted, not too much sweet and beans. I can say that it’s better than the other famous restaurant near there.

The price is the best thing.

Little Penang Kafe – Suria KLCC

Nasi Lemak Penang Fish

Little Penang at KLCC serves the best laksa I’ve had so far, flavourful, well-seasoned, and consistently delicious. Every time I dine in, the quality is always the same. Despite the place being packed most of the time, the service is fast. Definitely one of my favourite spots for a satisfying meal

At Little Penang Kafe – KLCC, the food did not disappoint. The Pie Tee was a real highlight – thin, crispy shells filled with fresh, tasty ingredients that gave a perfect crunch in every bite.

The Duck Egg Char Kueh Teow was delicious as well, packed with wok hei and loaded with prawns and cockles. The duck egg added extra richness, making the dish even more enjoyable.

A good place to satisfy Penang food cravings right in the heart of KLCC.

Frequently asked questions about Malaysian restaurants in Kuala Lumpur

    What makes Malaysian cuisine unique?

Malaysian cuisine is a delicious blend of influences, primarily Malay, Chinese, and Indian culinary traditions. You’re likely to encounter spices, herbs, and fresh ingredients that create a distinctive flavor profile. The extensive use of coconut milk, chili, and various sauces further contributes to its unique appeal.

What are some must-try Malaysian dishes?

There’s a plethora of must-try dishes! Some classics include Nasi Lemak (coconut rice with accompaniments), Char Kway Teow (stir-fried noodles), Laksa (spicy noodle soup), Satay (grilled skewers with peanut sauce), and Roti Canai (flaky flatbread). These represent the breadth of flavors and influences you’ll find.

Where are the best places to find authentic Malaysian food?

Authentic Malaysian food can be found throughout Kuala Lumpur. Look for hawker centers and kopitiams (traditional coffee shops) for affordable and delicious options. Areas like Jalan Alor and Bukit Bintang are renowned for their concentration of food stalls, though prices can sometimes be higher due to popularity. Don’t be afraid to venture beyond the tourist hotspots either; smaller, neighborhood establishments often offer truly authentic experiences.

What’s the difference between a hawker stall and a restaurant?

A hawker stall typically operates from a mobile cart or a small, open-air setup, offering a limited menu of specialized dishes prepared quickly and affordably. A restaurant, on the other hand, usually has a more formal setting, a wider menu, and may offer table service. Both provide fantastic Malaysian food, but the overall experience differs significantly.

    Are Malaysian restaurants generally spicy?

While many Malaysian dishes incorporate chili, the level of spiciness varies considerably. Some dishes are mild, while others pack a significant punch. When ordering, don’s hesitate to ask about the spiciness level or request a "less spicy" version. Many restaurants are willing to adjust the heat to your preference.

What is the typical price range for a meal at a Malaysian restaurant?

The price range depends greatly on the type of establishment. At a hawker stall, you can often find a satisfying meal for around RM5 - RM15. Restaurants will typically charge RM20 - RM50 or more per person, depending on the menu and ambiance. Kopitiams also offer great value, usually between RM8 - RM20.

What are some common ingredients used in Malaysian cooking?

You’re likely to encounter ingredients like turmeric, galangal, lemongrass, pandan leaves, belacan (fermented shrimp paste), chilies, coconut milk, and various types of noodles. Many dishes also incorporate a blend of spices that contribute to the complex and aromatic flavor profiles.

How do I order at a hawker stall?

Ordering at a hawker stall is usually straightforward. Simply approach the stall, look at the menu (if available), and clearly state what you’d like. Sometimes, there’s no menu, so pointing to what other customers are eating can work. Payment is typically made immediately after your order is prepared. Cash is almost always accepted; card payments can be less common.

Are there any vegetarian or vegan options available?

While many traditional Malaysian dishes contain meat or seafood, there are increasing numbers of vegetarian and vegan options available. Look for dishes labeled "vegetarian" or ask the vendor to prepare a dish without meat or fish sauce. Certain dishes, such as Nasi Lemak with tofu or vegetable-based curries, can often be adapted.

What are some tips for experiencing Malaysian food culture?

Embrace the shared dining experience! It's common for groups to order a variety of dishes and share them. Don’t be afraid to try new things! Be mindful of etiquette, such as using your right hand to handle food. And most importantly, enjoy the rich and diverse flavors of Malaysian cuisine!
