Whenever my grandson is back from Singapore to KL for his school break, I will arranged him to do BJJ private training and this time I decided to give a try for the Kid Group Class with Prof Joao Pantoja @ Bangsar Branch. My grandson love his class and enjoying himself very much. Prof Joao is highly professional and patient with the kids. Moving forward will attend both private training and group classes.

Went for a muay tai class here. The gym is okay, although I wish there was an AC and more people on the group training. Thanks to the couch for providing me with gloves and shin pads, as well as giving values advice on the punching technique. Overall the training was fine, but not nearly as much fun as it was in Thailand.

My 4 year old had his first BJJ class here yesterday. Everyone was so lovely and welcoming. My son has never joined in on any classes I have taken him to and he did the full hour here! He had the best time and keeps asking me when are we going back! Looking forward to coming back 🙂

My husband attended boxing class at Monarchy gym which is located at the City Center branch.
He told me
“I was a bit confused during registration, because it seemed a bit complicated. But now I have a gym to go when we are in Kuala Lumpur. Coach Taina has a good boxing philosophy and showed some techniques I did not know with precise explanation. This class session was mostly done in pairs. So it helped me to meet good positive people. We practiced techniques in pairs and shared good experience. Those drills helped me to understand how I can use technique in sparring and also feel distance I need to use it. And also facilities are very clean, fresh and new. Definitely 5 stars. Big thanks to coach Taina and friendly students.

I’m staying here for a few months and was interested in learning and practicing martial arts. I found out about this place through a WhatsApp group and decided to contact them. The team was very responsive and welcoming.
I later learned that they offer a free one-time trial session, but it is only available to residents. However, since I was genuinely interested, they kindly offered me a day pass at a discounted rate.
The instructors and staff are highly professional, and I truly recommend them to anyone interested in martial arts.

I recently joined a trial session at Monarchy MMA Club at bangsar, and it was a great experience. The session gave me a solid introduction to both grappling and striking, and the coaches explained everything clearly so it was easy to follow, even as a beginner.
The environment was very welcoming coach was supportive and made me feel comfortable trying new techniques. I really liked how the training balanced learning proper form with actual practice, so I walked away feeling both challenged and motivated.
If you’re curious about MMA and want to explore striking and grappling in a professional yet friendly setting, I’d definitely recommend giving Monarchy MMA a try.

I played BJJ at this gym on November 16th during my traveling in kuala lumpur.
I attended open mat time and really enjoyed a lot of roll.
Every member was kind to me.
This was my first time to play BJJ abroad and that became very precious memory.
Mat space is so large that I could play roll with no-stress.
I recommend this gym not only people live in this city but also tourists.

As a traveler, it’s always great to find a gym that is both welcoming and offers solid jiu-jitsu sparring. Daisho Jiu-Jitsu exceeded my expectations—everyone was friendly, respectful, and I felt right at home on the mats. Fitri, one of the black belts, personally invited me back to train, which speaks to the gym’s welcoming atmosphere. The training partners were skilled yet approachable, making for a great overall experience.
The gym is also conveniently located near a mall and several shops, so grabbing a meal before or after training is easy. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced practitioner, I highly recommend stopping by Daisho Jiu-Jitsu if you’re in the area.

Art of Submission is an amazing place to train, and I’m so glad I got the chance to experience it, even for a short time while passing through. The coaching is top-notch—every session is well-structured, and the instructors are not only knowledgeable but also really approachable and supportive. They take the time to help everyone improve, no matter their skill level.
The atmosphere is what really stands out, though. The staff and fellow students are so welcoming and friendly, which makes it such a positive environment to be in. It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable right away, even if you’re new or just visiting.
On top of that, the gym is super clean and well-organized, which shows how much they care about the space and the people training there. Whether you’re just passing through, like I was, or looking for a regular place to train, Art of Submission is a place where you’ll feel supported and motivated to grow. Classes are really comprehensive, the coaches go in-depth about the concepts so it’s easier to apply when rolling than just memorising step-by-step. I passed through KL last night and decided to train with at AOS on a recommendation from another gym in SE Asia. They were so nice! They let me know they had gis to borrow and it was easy to show up for a lesson.
This was my first time at a gym away from home and I was welcomed warmly immediately by a lot of the players. After the great lesson, the rolling was great. It’s a good family of players there and they were really good and fun to roll with. If I lived in KL this would be my home gym for sure. I could tell everyone there was really, really into BJJ and making each other better. It would be a great gym for a beginner looking to get good fast, as even the white belts obviously were learning fast there and having a lot of fun doing it. A+

I have enrolled my 2 sons in the Mini class in Bukit Jelutong for 6 months now. I have nothing but good reviews. My sons were 3years 3 month old and 5 years old when they attended their first class. And the progress was tremendously good. Both my kids able to apply the techniques during the sparring session after only 5months. The routine and the vibe of the lessons were specificly catered for the small kids. The techniques were infused in a fun routine that the children were having fun without realizing they are practicing self dense art. The disicipline lessons Coach Steven instill in the children in a warm way during the class is definitely a bonus! im over 40 y.o ,local and I train regularly at the Bukit Jelutong Branch , and sometimes at the main gym in Setapak. Both locations offer different experiences, and both share amazing instructor and people.
I especially appreciate the mix of practitioners at Bukit Jelutong where we have a group of adults in their 30s and 40s, we also have a group of young adults in their 18’s -early 20s’ . our pace is moderate. Perfect for me .
When I need to switch up the pace and skills , I’ll make a visit to Setapak , where its a sea of 20-30 y.o athletes.
If you are a female, being comfortable in training is very important, especially in a sport where you are physically touching and practically hugging 80% of the time . So female have their own class ,with a female instructor and no males in sight/viccinity.
One culture we have going for us is depending on training time, we would be able to perform our solat together in the gym . We also have a good mix of nationalities which i think its healthy and unique .
If you are looking for quality instructors , clean and hygienic gym, great people doesn’t matter if you are muslim or not, izza is a geat choice.

The values she has developed through Choices have played a key role in shaping her character. Her courage and resilience in playing team sports; discipline & focus in performing arts comes from the skills and confidence she has built through CKD. My son Alnael has been with the centre for 2years. Instructor are very professional especially Mr Qing. He is good at bringing out the best from his student be it speaking up, discipline & teamwork. They instill discipline to the students at young age but with gentle approach.
Owner of this centre Mr Harison is also a friendly person and very attentive to students/parents feedback or issue. Recommended place for martial art!

My daughter started with them during the pandemic when classes were all online. It was not easy then but she still enjoyed the classes despite them being one-to-one. When physical classes commenced, she enjoyed them even more as she had other students to model after and could be corrected. The classes instill a sense of discipline, responsibility and to respect and honour their seniors. Students are taught practical self-defence techniques like how to release themselves from grips and grapples. All the instructors are very passionate about CKD and are great with kids. It’s one class my daughter doesn’t complain about. Highly recommended.

I had the incredible privilege of attending a Master Workshop hosted by Master Harrison in London, and I can honestly say it was one of the most inspiring and eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had! Master Harrison is not only an exceptional martial artist but also an outstanding educator who knows how to connect with students of all ages, especially kids. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
His recent workshop on applying teaching skills through kids’ incentives and games was nothing short of brilliant. Master Harrison demonstrated how to creatively disguise teaching drills within fun and engaging games, making the learning process both effective and enjoyable. His ability to seamlessly blend skill development with play showed his deep understanding of how children learn and grow in a martial arts environment.
Master Harrison’s approach fosters not only physical skills but also life lessons in discipline, respect, and perseverance—all while maintaining a fun and supportive atmosphere. If you’re looking for a martial arts school that nurtures personal growth through positive reinforcement and engaging activities, Choices CKD in Malaysia is the place to be. I can’t recommend Master Harrison enough—his passion for teaching is truly inspiring, and I can only imagine how much his students benefit from his expertise.

Choices Choi Kwang Do have an exceptional business model, I love the way each of the children get individual attention in class and that the instructors go above and beyond to help the children succeed and reach their potential. Even though the classes are run with students of different grades, the classes are tailored for each of the students to grow no matter what level. We have loved watching our son develop over time from being quiet in class to confident in his ability, helping other students follow instruction in partnership work and being able to proudly recite The Promise at the beginning of class. Choices instructors are extremely invested in helping each of their students to achieve.

The gym is also a training venue for the Malaysian Wrestling Team and Aiman is a generous host, ensuring that the gym is always clean and tidy for all of the training sessions. I highly recommend checking this gym out and exploring all of their classes and seeing which one you prefer. He also has one of the best kid’s training programs in KL, if you’re looking for kids classes I am sure AZMA Martial Arts would be a great gym to join!

They have a great welcoming energy that makes it very accessible for new comers and a wealth of knowledge and experience to help challenge and accelerate the progress of experienced martial artists. I try to go every week to Ben’s group self defense class not only for the very practical and realistic training but also for the good vibe at Jeet. I did not expect self defense class could be this fun!
Ben is professional and obviously passionate about martial arts. He explains the moves patiently and clearly. Will definitely recommend this place to girls, women, teenagers or anyone just want to feel more confident and secured in their body and this big wild world!
Oh and the place is always super clean… :d

I was visiting a friend in KL from New York and joined my friend in a couple of sessions at Jeet Academy with coach Ben. It was an amazing experience. I had minimal experience beforehand, but I was able to learn so much in just a couple of days because of how knowledgeable Ben was. He has a lot of passion and love for what he does, and that passes through in his training. He imparted a lot of wisdom about Martial arts in general and explains very well why the things he is teaching are so effective. The gym itself is very nice, with new mats and paddings, I was even able to borrow proper gi from Ben. It was also really cool to see some pro-fighters training there. I cannot recommend this place, so definitely check it out whether you are just beginning or advanced. Thank you, Ben.

Great place to get fit and learn how to defend yourself. I live in Spain now but was visiting KL for a few weeks and wanted to continue my martial arts training. I happened on Jeet Academy, and from the start Ben was friendly, professional, and prompt with communication.
I tried out a class and ended up paying the monthly fee for unlimited classes. I learned a lot, and found a community within the academy that welcomed me with open arms.
I attended Jeet Kune Do, Kali, and also Krav Maga, and enjoyed them all. We even had an outdoor class one Sunday, which was fun.
Will definitely be back for classes whenever I am in town.

Have been training Brazilian Ju-jitsu at Hikari Glo Damansara and Ampang for almost a year now. Its been an amazing experience and everyone’s very supportive. Big shout out to Prof Bruno, Coach Cassandra, Prof JC and Coach Ezekiel for being a big part of my starting journey. And more so, for enabling such a great supportive culture that I experience from everyone at Hikari. Everyone’s very helpful, extremely humble and always willing to help.

As someone with 0 background in any form of martial arts, I made a decision in the middle of 2023 to take the plunge into the world of BJJ.
It’s now 6 months into my journey but I’ve not looked back since. Professor Bruno and Coach Cass are inspirational coaches that brings you to push yourself to your limits and more. Not to mention that everyone who trains here are also great to be around. There’s a good mix of higher belts and beginners but I’ve never been made to feel out of place or unwelcome.
In short, I definitely recommend Hikari to anyone who wants to try out Martial Arts. In addition to BJJ, they also have Muay Thai and Boxing classes.

I recently visited the Hikari in GLO Damansara KL and couldn’t be happier! The affordable parking is a plus(1rm for 2 hours), making it easy to attend classes regularly. The mats are top-notch—clean, soft, no burn, well-maintained, and perfect for training.
Bruno Barbosa, the head of the gym, brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience to the team. His teaching style is both engaging and effective, making each class a valuable learning experience. The welcoming atmosphere and supportive community he fosters make this gym a fantastic place for both beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Highly recommend Hikari BJJ for anyone looking to train in Kuala Lumpur!

This place is hot as #&@* but the jiujitsu is legit. Each class feels like a mini seminar. The technique of the day is typically explained over 30 minutes or so and the instructors keep a close eye to ensure you’re performing it correctly.
There’s a good mix of belts here, all sizes and genders. Ranging from casual hobbyists to absolute freaks. This place (thankfully) lacks the old school, chest-thumping, sigma-grindset atmosphere that some academies inherit from the “good ol’ days” in Brasil. Everyone is very welcoming and hoping to see you get better. If you roll with respect and consideration, you’ll receive it back.
Coaches Cassandra and Journ, along with your teammates, will also push you outside your comfort zone if you express an interest in competing. Was able bag my first gold medal in my time at Hikari. I’m not sure if I would have been able to otherwise. The coaches themselves are also high-level competitors, so they walk the talk.
The facilities are simple but well maintained. There are two separate rooms for Muay Thai and Grappling, as well as two shower rooms.
If you don’t mind padding your step count a little, there’s ample parking along Jalan Telawi/Terasek. If you’re boujee, Bangsar Village 2 has parking that typically costs RM6 a pop.

As a person who enjoys and believes that practicing martial arts is a way of life, Hikari MMA is the place to be. Having trained in few other gyms, this place has been the one that resonates with my values of showing respect, camaraderie, and courage.
It’s been almost 3 years that I’ve been training here both in Muay Thai and BJJ. The coaches here are out of this world. From having to learn so much from Coach Cass and Coach Bruno when I’m training in BJJ. They are patient, friendly and supportive to everyone’s journey!
Also to have one of my fight record under Coach Kai and more to come. He is so technical and understanding of the sport where he sees what we should work on best in terms of fight style and how we can use our strength to our advantages. He doesn’t accounts for your failures but leads a great team of fighters to where he pushes everyone for greatness.
If you’re ever looking for a place to train, Hikari MMA is one of them. Conducive environment and facilities that will attend to your needs. The admin team is also great and friendly! Cheers to Audrey for being a great Muay Thai sparring partner and also attending to my enquiries regarding the fees etc.

Frequently Asked Questions about Martial Arts Centers in Kuala Lumpur
What types of martial arts are commonly taught in Kuala Lumpur?
Kuala Lumpur offers a wide variety of martial arts disciplines. Commonly taught styles include Taekwondo, Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wing Chun, and Aikido. Some centers may also offer a blend of different disciplines, often referred to as mixed martial arts (MMA).
How do I choose the right martial arts center for me?
Selecting the right center depends on your personal goals and preferences. Consider the style of martial art you’re interested in, the center's reputation, the instructors' qualifications, and the atmosphere of the training environment. Attending a trial class is a great way to experience the center firsthand.
What is the typical cost of martial arts classes in Kuala Lumpur?
The cost of classes can vary significantly based on the style, center's reputation, and class frequency. Generally, monthly fees can range from around RM150 to RM500 or more. Some centers offer introductory packages or discounts for long-term commitments. Always inquire about registration fees and other potential charges.
Are martial arts classes suitable for all ages and fitness levels?
Many martial arts centers offer programs for a wide range of ages and fitness levels. Some have specialized classes for children, teenagers, and adults. Beginners are generally welcome, and instructors usually tailor their teaching to accommodate different skill levels. It’s advisable to check with the center regarding age restrictions or fitness requirements.
What kind of equipment or attire is required for classes?
The required equipment and attire will depend on the martial art being practiced. Often, centers require a uniform (often called a "gi" or "dobok"), which can be purchased from the center or a designated supplier. Others may only require comfortable athletic wear. It’s best to confirm requirements before your first class. Some centers provide loaner equipment to start.
What are the potential benefits of studying martial arts?
Studying martial arts offers numerous benefits beyond self-defense. These include improved physical fitness, increased self-confidence, enhanced discipline, better coordination, and stress relief. It can also provide a sense of community and personal accomplishment.
What should I look for in a qualified martial arts instructor?
A qualified instructor should have extensive experience in the specific martial art, a proven track record of teaching, and a commitment to ethical and safe training practices. They should be able to effectively communicate techniques, provide constructive feedback, and foster a positive learning environment.
Are there any safety concerns I should be aware of?
While martial arts training can be physically demanding, safety is a top priority at reputable centers. Ensure the center follows proper safety protocols, provides adequate supervision, and uses appropriate protective gear. Listen to your body, communicate any injuries promptly, and avoid pushing yourself beyond your limits.
What is the difference between a dojo, a gym, and a training center?
While all three offer training spaces, they often have different connotations. A dojo traditionally refers to a martial arts training hall, often associated with Japanese martial arts. A gym is a more general fitness facility, which may include martial arts classes alongside other activities. A training center is a more generic term encompassing various fitness and combat disciplines.
Can I try out a few different centers before committing to one?
Absolutely! It is highly recommended to try out several different centers before making a long-term commitment. Most centers offer introductory classes or short-term packages that allow you to experience their teaching style and environment firsthand. This helps ensure it's the right fit for you.
